Flying Clubs

Flying Club's Pass On Aviation from Generation to Generation

We are currently evaluating the possible formation of a non-profit, member-owned flying club at the Canandaigua Airport. A flying club creates an affordable option for individuals to rent an aircraft as a group without the need to layout a great deal of capital to own an aircraft.

Getting a non-profit flying club off the ground requires overcoming a number of  obstacles including the following, which determine the total membership costs for club members:

Initial Buy In – Pays for Initial Aircraft Purchase and First Years Fixed Operating Expenses. The latter is the clubs operating fund for the first year.

Monthly Dues – Fixed Expenses including hangar and insurance.

Aircraft Hourly Rate – Annual, MX, Oil, Fuel, Engine Fund.

Financing – Private financial backing is critical to build a great club and can be done in a number of ways including a lease of an aircraft to the club. A purchase option for the aircraft to be used could be included in the lease allowing the club to buy an aircraft when there are enough members to justify the purchase.

Why Canandaigua?

There use to be a  non-profit flying club in Canandaigua, but it faded away. A lot has changed since that time and with the coming airport runway expansion project more people will be attracted to the Canandaigua Airport, including non-aircraft owning pilots. Costs for general avation aircraft at the Greater Rochester International Airport continue to climb on all fronts, from tiedowns and hangers, to fuel and landing fees….not to mention the required finger printing and background checks just to walk to your aircraft. For pilots and aircraft owners in Rochester, there are few options unless they wish to drive 30+ miles to Williamson-Sodus or Penn Yan to join an affordable, active, flying club.

Being located close to the Thruway and Route 332 makes Canandaigua an ideal choice for those who don’t mind a 25 minute or less drive from Rochester. Access is easy and costs here are far less than Rochester…a more pilot friendly, hassle free opportunity await!

What’s Next

We would like to hear from you to see what level of interest there is to forming a non-profit, member-owned flying club. The Canandaigua Airport is ripe for the general public to get involved in aviation and a a non-profit, member-owned flying club would be an asset to our airport. To get the conversation started we have created a site online at: http://www.canandaiguaflyingclub.com

  2. As a former Canandaigua resident and someone who plans on spending a great deal more time in the area, I’d enjoy being a member of a Cdga Flight Club. Great centralized location with plenty to offer all pilots. Please include me on any/all developments.

  3. I would be interested too. I am am member od one flight club now but it would be great to have one in Canandaigua!

  4. I belive that forming a flying club in canandaigua is a very good idea because it would be very beneficial to the community and would help promote general aviation. As I private pilot with 110 hours, I have constantly seen the need for a flying club at the canandaigua airport. If you have any questions feel free to contact me. Thanks, Jim Busch
